Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
2 Corinthians 5:17
There used to be a time when I could not scroll through my Facebook feed without seeing a reference to a popular documentary of similar name. Though I never watched the documentary, I would occasionally read the comments to see long time meat eaters vowing to become vegetarian or even better vegan. Putting down the barbecue and picking up the tofu. Wait… what?
And though I applaud their decision to make that lifestyle change. I couldn’t say the same for myself. Perhaps because I’ve never seen the documentary and my eyes are still closed to those things which could have a life-changing impact on it. Change is good. Especially when you can learn and grow from it.
On his journey to Damascus, Saul had his “What the Hell-th?” moment. God revealed himself to Saul in a way that only he could and changed his life, purpose and name all for His glory. His conversion was private but his action was public. Instead of persecuting Christians he began preaching Christianity. Just like those that have watched the documentary and vowed to never return to their meat-eating ways, Saul better known as Paul, had an experience that took him in a direction that he never wavered from.
God’s desire is for us all to be saved (2 Peter 3:9). Most of us won’t experience a voice calling out to us on a road as we’re traveling about coupled with temporary blindness. But there will be a moment where God will reveal himself to you and you will have to decide which path to take.
I know that the key to better health involves lifestyle changes particularly as it relates to food. But something about watching that documentary and anticipating what I might see that might change the way I feel about beef, sausage or chicken has me leery. Because once I see it, I can’t un-see it. And I’ll never look at meat the same. The same is true of God. Once you truly know Him, there is no way to un-know Him. Which is a good thing because life-changing experiences aren’t designed to leave you the same way they found you.
