Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.

Colossians 3:23-24

Impressive. Fantastic. Magnificent. Game-changing. Classic. Excellent.

For the past few days people have been buzzing about Beyonce and her performance at Coachella. Queen Bey threw down the gauntlet for any other performer who would dare challenge her on dance moves, song choices, use of cultural references and general queenness. Is she the greatest of all times? Has she risen above the likes of Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and the gloved one himself, Michael Jackson? Arguably so, but then why should we compare? After all, isn’t it enough that she gives each performance her all? Surely we assume that she must when we consider the countless hours of choreography, rehearsal and vocal preparation necessary to stand before thousands (millions if you consider the impact of social media) to execute a flawless performance.

Of all the ways in which people describe her performance, I like the word, excellent, the best. Merriam Webster defines excellent as “extremely good, outstanding”; a fitting description for her performance and for the rest of us, who can be Queen Bey, too… if we want to. Wait, let me clarify because I see your furrowed brow and feel confusion setting in. We cannot literally be Beyonce Giselle Knowles Carter. There is only one. God has already entrusted one soul with the gifts, talents and abilities wrapped up in the human form known as Queen Bey. There will never be an opportunity for us to trade in our singing ability, dance moves or cocky-fresh for hers. That part won’t make us Bey.

But what we can do is practice excellence, in everything, at all times. When we operate in excellence in the assignments that God has given us then we can shine. We don’t know the motivation behind the work ethic and professionalism that Beyonce displays. Since God is the only one that truly knows our hearts, we may never know.  But what we do know is that true excellence isn’t measured in likes, shares or applause. When we strive for excellence in Christ we forego those treasures of the world for something much better, the approval of God.
