The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands.
Psalms 138:8
I don’t know about you, but there are times when I wonder if the plans I have for my life match the purpose for which I was created. Purpose gives meaning to life. And everything created has a purpose. What is my purpose? Am I living up to it? How do I even know? These questions have plagued me in the past and quite honestly left me with some sleepless nights. But one day I read something that gave me peace and freedom. And I hope that if you are struggling with questions like these, it will do the same for you.
In Psalms 138:8, David says, "The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O Lord endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands.” I think the key words in this verse are ‘his purpose.' His purpose means that it may not be what I desire but ultimately it will be good for me. It may not be what I would have chosen for myself. But instead, better. And the word ‘fulfill’ means that it will come to pass. Many times we get caught up in figuring out that one thing that we were born to do. We’re looking for that one choice or path that once taken will allow all of the starts to align in our favor. I’m sure that several of us may have friends or family members who had a strong, clear sense of purpose from an early age. But for many of us, that’s not the case. And, that’s okay. Scripture says that He who created us will bring to completion the purpose he has for us. Whew! That takes the pressure off of you (and me) trying to do everything just right or turning life upside dome during what some may term a mid-life crisis. Allow yourself to rest and breathe easy knowing that God’s got it. If you are earnestly seeking Him then you will undoubtedly walk out the purpose for which you were intended.
